Multi-Year Renewal Solidifies the Network’s Nextel Cup Content
Producer/Host Kerry Murphey Doubles Racing Coverage
for Affiliates to Twice Each Weekday
New York, NY – February 5, 2007 -- United Stations Radio Networks, Inc., (“USRN”), an independent leader in original network radio programming, today announced that it has both renewed and expanded its short-form auto racing coverage via a multi-year deal with THE FINAL LAP with Kerry Murphey. The short-form weekday feature was added to USRN’s roster of nationally distributed programming in early 2004, and it has rapidly become one of the company’s most popular daily program offerings. United Stations EVP/Programming Andy Denemark made this announcement today from the network’s New York City Headquarters.
As part of this multi-year extension, THE FINAL LAP with Kerry Murphey will expand from one to two programs daily, Monday through Friday, and the expansion will happen the week of February 12th, just in time for the re-start of the NASCAR season at Daytona International Speedway. The 90-second features contain news, results and vital statistics for the growing universe of racing enthusiasts in America. The program is researched, produced and hosted by Kerry Murphey, an experienced radio producer and sports correspondent. United Stations will continue to handle all affiliate relations, distribution, ad sales and promotion of the feature. The Final Lap is available on a market exclusive barter basis to radio stations and the shows are delivered daily via digital download.
Kerry Murphey is a radio veteran with nearly two decades under his belt in the medium. Murphey started his career at KIIS-FM Los Angeles where he was the producer of the Magic Matt Alan afternoon show. After three years at KIIS-FM, Kerry moved to KKXX Bakersfield to become the morning news/sports personality. In 1994, he joined Blair Garner’s syndicated After Midnite as the sports talent for the show using the on-air moniker of Jim Shortz. It was the popularity of the racing elements of those sports reports that helped develop the concept and execution of The Final Lap. Merging his two passions together, Kerry Murphey (using his real name) now delivers the latest in racing news, stories, stats, and interviews to radio listeners across America.
"It’s no secret that the popularity of NASCAR racing has grown exponentially, and the great work that Kerry Murphey does in his feature reporting has helped us ride the wave of racing’s boom period,” said Denemark. “We’re thrilled to know that Kerry will be part of our universe for a long time,” he added. Kerry Murphey commented by saying “The team at United Stations has done an incredible job of getting our race coverage out there all across America, and of course for me as a fan of the sport, I’m living a dream doing this every day.”
The Final Lap was USRN’s third entry into the field of radio programs that cover NASCAR racing and motor-sports events, and it is also the network’s most recent racing show. It is also its only foray with this subject matter in a weekday, short-form format. United Stations other NASCAR-related shows are Thunder Road, hosted by Steve Mitchell of WYAY-FM, Atlanta, and Racing Rocks! hosted by rock icon Riki Rachtman. Thunder Road began airing in 1998. Racing Rocks! began airing in 2003, and is now available as both a Mainstream Rock program or as a Classic Rock mix. Together, USRN’s three racing properties account for nearly 425 radio affiliations.
United Stations Radio Networks, Inc., is the nation's largest independently owned and operated radio network. The company currently distributes and produces multiple format specific services to approximately 4,500 rated radio stations across the country including Adult Contemporary, Album Rock, Contemporary Hit, Country, Oldies, Smooth Jazz, Talk and Urban.
